Religion plays a vital role in human societies by providing a framework of beliefs, practices, and values that guide the way of life. It often offers spiritual guidance, fosters community and social cohesion, shapes cultural identity, and provides emotional support. Essentially, all religions encourage individuals to be good human beings.

In ancient history, the Catholic Church had limited direct engagement with Buddhism due to geographical separation, historical context, and different missionary focuses. However, European contact with Buddhism has become more prominent in recent years, particularly through the efforts of missionaries.

A significant transformation in the relationship between the Vatican and Buddhism occurred after the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II), which aimed to “update” the Church in order to better connect with an increasingly secularized world. The council’s document “Nostra Aetate” emphasized the importance of dialogue and interrelation between Catholicism and other religions, including Buddhism.

Since that time, several popes, including Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and Pope Francis, have engaged with many Buddhist leaders, such as the Dalai Lama and monks in Thailand. This circumstance has led to numerous visits and dialogues, recognizing the peaceful advancement of Buddhism, particularly in Thailand.

Meanwhile, the Vatican has a dedicated body called the “Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue (PCID)” to initiate the interfaith in accordance with the spirit of the Second Vatican Council. This department can promote mutual understanding, respect and collaboration between Catholics and other religions, encourage the study of religions, and encourage the development of individuals dedicated to dialogue.

Currently, our world is facing significant challenges due to the extreme individualistic tendencies which can lead to conflicts and violence. Therefore, it is essential that we should return to the fundamental teachings shared by all religions: the pursuit of goodness and virtue. The relationship between the Vatican and the Buddhist community holds great promise, as both traditions embrace core values such as peace, compassion, freedom, well-being, and human dignity.

In this spirit, Pope Francis has announced various initiatives aimed at fostering deeper collaboration between the two traditions for the betterment of our world. There is promising hope for the future, founded on the shared principles cherished by both Catholics and Buddhists such as living in harmony, respect, and understanding. These values, highlighted by both the Vatican and Buddhists community, provide a strong foundation for a collective commitment to peace and solidarity.
