George Guido Lombardi: Here’s What’s Behind the Trump-Putin Meeting

George Guido Lombardi, an Italian-American businessman and advisor to Donald Trump, shares his perspective on the meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.

Despite Germany’s strong economic interests in maintaining peaceful relations with Moscow, Berlin continues to block any diplomatic solution with Russia. How can this apparent contradiction be explained?

The relationship between Germany and Russia is a very complicated one that goes back hundreds of years. Recently, the situation has become even more complicated, given that there are two national interests in Germany: on the one hand, an economic interest in collaboration, especially regarding raw materials; and on the other, a diametrically opposed political interest, because what we call the German deep state, especially linked to the deep state of the European Union, and European Union commissions like the von der Leyen commission, are moving in a direction completely opposed to Vladimir Putin’s nationalism.

Globalists, whether in Europe, even those on the far left—since most globalists are far left—want a one-world government. They don’t get along with all nationalist movements, from Trump to Putin, Orban, or anyone else, Melei in Argentina, and so on. So, unfortunately, there are contradictions, but they’re simply due to the differing interests of different groups within Germany.

The documents that have emerged regarding relations between the Obama administration and the European Union are raising many questions. Do you think they could deal a final blow to the already fragile European leadership, built on a precarious political architecture?

As I said in an interview on an Italian television recently, there are a lot of documents coming out here in the United States at the moment, regarding the role of some parts of the American intelligence services, in support of the Obama administration first and foremost, and also during the period

When Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State, she was Foreign Minister. So there are several, perhaps half a dozen, ongoing investigations, both on Obama, on Comey and other former CIA leaders, but also on Hillary Clinton. The thing is, some of these documents, as I mentioned in an interview, even implicate a certain Matteo Renzi, who was Prime Minister of Italy at the time.

There are documents linking him to Obama, and visits and phone conversations between the two. As for the European Commission, von der Leyen, and others within the European Union, we’ll just have to wait and see. I wouldn’t be surprised if something comes out, but it will probably take some time.

A compromise with Washington, even without a complete victory over Kiev, could represent a political victory for Putin and Trump. Yet the Kremlin seems reluctant. What do you think are the main internal obstacles holding back the Russian president?

What is holding back, or at least pushing, President Putin to, let’s say, reach this agreement with Trump, not on Ukraine, but on other issues, most likely comes from the circle of so-called oligarchs close to him because they are losing a lot both in terms of control, but also in economic and financial terms.

So, despite Putin claiming to be the absolute tsar, he still governs with the help of other forces within today’s Russia. So there may be some invisible results, but they will most likely help bring about a détente in some areas of the world.

For example, relations between Russia and India, relations between Russia and China, relations between Russia and what remains of Russian influence in the Middle East and especially in Syria, and so there could be some positive things from this conversation that Trump will have with Putin.

As for Ukraine, I don’t think there will be any news, incredible or important, maybe a discussion will start, but frankly I don’t think Ukraine is anything more than an excuse for these two to talk about other things.

China and India are pillars of the BRICS bloc and key players in challenging the dollar’s hegemony. What role could they play in upcoming international summits, even those where they aren’t officially involved?

As for the BRICS countries, especially Brazil and India, they count for very little right now, especially on the international stage. China has always tried to use the BRICS countries to ensure that the Chinese currency, or rather Chinese finance, finds a little more support.

But especially the Indians, and others as well, aren’t so naive as to even consider handing their currency over to the Chinese. What’s happening instead is a fairly epochal shift, from printed currencies to a global financial system that can grant both a certain amount of freedom to maneuver to the various national governments, but also control over what is essentially the dark web of finance.

And so the overtures that Trump and Elon Musk have made regarding cryptocurrency aren’t vague overtures about Bitcoin or some other virtual currency. They’re overtures to make banks understand that a system will have to be found, especially with new artificial intelligence, to monitor all financial transactions so they can be seen by various governments.

Given the current geopolitical context and the backroom negotiations that likely preceded the meeting, what outcome do you expect from the face-to-face meeting between Trump and Putin?

I don’t think there will be a major resolution to the Ukrainian problem. However, there could be some openings from Putin. The important thing is to see if Trump can keep that unhinged madman Zelensky under control, because clearly Zelensky isn’t willing to, let’s say, make a fool of himself and give up some of the territories. Therefore, it’s a very difficult position, Trump’s, and I doubt there will be any substantial results in the short term.

One thing I forgot to mention is that in the upcoming discussion between Putin and Trump, another very important topic was also discussed: space. And I’ll leave that to your listeners.
